Sister Jean, the Ragtime Queen & Li’l Laundry Madison, Ohio |
|
Jean Huling and Kenan Leslie,
a grandmother-grandson team, have been entertaining people with good,
old-fashioned ragtime for several years, with Jean playing piano and Kenan
accompanying on washboard and singing.
He also plays piano solos on his own.
For many years Sister Jean performed
with her husband Laundry Fat (Paul
Huling). She was the first woman (and
with her husband, the first couple) to be honored with the Scott Joplin Award. They were both members of Ralph
Grugel’s famous Eagle Jazz Band.
After Laundry Fat passed away in 2006, grandson Kenan took over his grandfather’s role as
washboarditionist and singer. Later,
taught by his grandmother Jean, he began performing rags on the piano.
Whether they are playing ragtime, blues, or old spirituals, Sister Jean & Lil’ Laundry
continue to pass the music down the generations and keep syncopation
alive!
